What happens when more than 350,000 people arrive at the same digital orchard at once?
For the browser-based game Cash Apples, the answer appears to be a sudden pause - the orchard has closed until further notice after a surge of players arrived to harvest its rare digital fruit. What was designed as a lighthearted online orchard quickly drew a crowd large enough to overwhelm the experience, leaving hundreds of thousands of hopeful harvesters refreshing the page from outside the gates.
The apples themselves remain on the trees. Whether the harvest will reopen soon remains to be seen.
